Minimoog and Popularization — The Synth Takes the Stage
Lineage of Electronic Keyboard Instruments, Article 4. In 1970, the Minimoog arrived. It compressed a wall-sized modular system into a single integrated unit with a built-in keyboard, doing away with patch cables — the first truly 'portable synth.' Its thick lead and bass sounds reshaped rock, funk, and progressive rock, while rival ARP rose to prominence. This article traces how Isao Tomita sent the sound out from Japan to the world, and how the synth became an ordinary instrument rather than a special piece of equipment.
The Invention of the “Portable Synth”
The Moog modular system (Article 3) changed music history, but it was huge, expensive, and bound to the studio. What turned it into an instrument you could bring on stage was the Minimoog Model D, released in 1970.
- Condensed the modular configuration (3 VCOs, a VCF, a VCA, and EGs) into a single integrated chassis
- Eliminated patch cables — internal wiring was fixed, so sound design was just a matter of turning knobs
- Built-in keyboard, so it could be carried out of the studio
- Stabilized voltage, freeing players from constant retuning
With intuitive controls where turning a knob changed the sound instantly, the Minimoog became the first successful instrument to turn the synth into a performer’s tool.
A Thick Sound — Reshaping Rock and Funk
The Minimoog’s sound was thick and powerful. In particular:
- Lead — a piercing tone that sang melodies like a guitar solo
- Bass — a fat low end that became the foundation of funk and disco
This sound transformed popular music. Keith Emerson (of ELP) played the Minimoog hard on stage, making it a centerpiece of progressive rock. In funk, Stevie Wonder and Parliament/Funkadelic made heavy use of synth bass. That “thick analog sound” still stands today as the sonic symbol of that era.
The Rise of ARP — an Era of Rivals
Following Moog’s success, ARP Instruments rose up as a formidable rival:
- ARP 2600 — a legendary semi-modular instrument (pre-wired internally, yet still patchable), which also spread widely into education and research
- ARP Odyssey — a 2-VCO portable synth built to rival the Minimoog
In this way, the synth came to form an “instrument market” contested by multiple manufacturers — moving from Moog’s monopoly to an era where players had a choice.
Isao Tomita — From Japan to the World
In Japan, Isao Tomita (1932–2016) personally imported a Moog system and pursued synthesizer sound entirely self-taught.
- Snowflakes Are Dancing (1974) — a synth reimagining of Debussy that climbed into the upper ranks of the US Billboard classical chart
- Built an intricately layered sonic world by overdubbing one note at a time (the instrument was monophonic at the time)
- The ethereal, richly colored “Tomita sound” earned worldwide acclaim and became a cornerstone of Japanese electronic music
Carlos’s Switched-On Bach (Article 3) had opened the door, and Tomita lifted it to the heights of “sonic art.” This is where the lineage of Japanese electronic music begins, leading on to YMO (around Article 6).
The Monophonic Wall
The Minimoog drove popularization forward, but one decisive limitation remained: it was monophonic (one note at a time). It could play leads and basslines, but it couldn’t hold a chord. Sounding “multiple notes at once,” the way a piano does, was a formidable technical challenge for analog synths.
Each note required its own independent set of oscillators and filters, and stacking that many times over ran into steep barriers of cost and stability.
