Soft Synths and the DAW Era — Instruments Leave the Box
Lineage of Electronic Keyboard Instruments, Article 10. Beyond VA synthesis modeling analog circuits digitally lay a world that no longer needed dedicated hardware at all. As VST plugins, both Moog and the DX7 — every classic instrument — are reborn as software. Music production is now completed entirely inside the DAW, and the MIDI keyboard has become an "input device" with no sound source of its own. From live performance on Ableton Live to music made on a single laptop, this article traces the era when the electronic keyboard left its physical box behind.
The instrument leaves the box
Article 9’s VA (virtual analog) demonstrated that the circuitry of analog synthesizers could be simulated digitally. If sound could be made in software, the next logical step was clear — dedicated hardware wouldn’t even be needed anymore. Any synthesizer could run inside a computer. The electronic keyboard was finally freed from its physical box.
VST (1996) — the plugin standard
The turning point was the VST (Virtual Studio Technology) standard, established by Steinberg in 1996.
- Sound sources and effects could be plugged into music production software as plugins (software components)
- Soft synths (software sound sources) and soft effects could be freely combined inside a PC
- Just as MIDI in Article 5 standardized “connections between hardware devices,” VST standardized “connections between software components”
Through this, “buying a synth” gradually became “installing software.”
Every classic instrument reborn
Soft synths brought back essentially every classic instrument of the past:
- Moog, Prophet-5, Jupiter-8, DX7, TB-303 — legendary machines across the decades were precisely reproduced as plugins
- Compared to the real hardware, they were cheaper, took no physical space, could be launched any number of times simultaneously, and stayed perfectly in tune
- Sampled sound libraries also grew massive — tens of gigabytes of piano samples, full orchestral libraries, all fitting on a PC
The “Moog more stable than the real hardware” we saw in Article 9 became fully generalized here. The question running through this series — imitation versus creation, what counts as “the real thing” — arrives at a point where the entire past can be reproduced in software.
The DAW — production entirely on screen
The vessel that held soft synths was the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) — music production software such as Cubase, Logic, Pro Tools, FL Studio, and Ableton Live.
- Recording, sequencing, sound sources, effects, and mixing all came together in a single screen
- The hardware workstation of Article 7 (the Korg M1) effectively moved into the PC as software
- A musician’s studio went from a mountain of rack gear to a single laptop
The MIDI keyboard — a keyboard with no sound of its own
As software sound sources took center stage, the role of the hardware keyboard changed. The MIDI keyboard (controller) — an “input device” with no sound source of its own, simply sending performance data to a PC — became widespread.
- This is the ultimate extension of the “separation of keyboard and sound source” that the MIDI standard in Article 5 made possible
- The keyboard provides the “feel of playing,” while the sound itself is generated by software inside the PC
- Equipped with pads, knobs, and faders, it evolved into a hybrid controller for operating the DAW by hand
The physical substance of “the instrument” split completely into keyboard (hardware) and sound source (software).
Ableton Live — a DAW you perform with
The DAW became not just a production tool but also an instrument for live performance. The symbol of this shift is Ableton Live.
- Fragments of sound (clips) are combined and looped on the spot, building a track in real time
- It dissolved the boundary between DJing and live performance, giving rise to musicians who take the stage with nothing but a laptop
- It represents the sampling philosophy (reassembling fragments) from Article 7 evolved into real-time performance
The endpoint of democratization, and what comes next
Soft synths and the DAW mark the endpoint of the throughline running through this series: the “democratization” of the electronic keyboard. Sound design that once required a wall of equipment and enormous funding, back in the Moog era, can now be done by anyone, with free software and an inexpensive MIDI keyboard. The hundred-year path of democratization — from the research lab, to the stage, to the home, and now into everyone’s PC and phone — is complete.
